In ‘Mermaid’, a female figure cuts through the surface in a single forward reach, arms outstretched, hair streaming, body dissolving into the swirl and eddy around her. The line between flesh and water is barely there.
The figure is rendered in warm amber against the cool blue-grey of the water, the two elements intertwining until you cannot be sure where one ends and the other begins. It is both classical and contemporary, both figurative and abstract.
The subject is freedom, specifically, the kind a paralysed body finds in water. Weightless. Unimpeded. Entirely itself.
